A Curated List of IP and EDA Bloggers

When I wrote the blog post on Semiconductor bloggers, I thought that it was challenging to find blogs. But boy, was I wrong - it's much, much harder to find independent EDA and IP bloggers. There are plenty of syndicated and corporate blogs that cover EDA, but I did not want to add them to this list because there's a product marketing flavor to that content and face it, a Cadence blog will not cover a Synopsys tool, without regard.

While Googling this, I came across some really promising links that I thought would make my job easier, but no such luck. For example, the incomparable Steve Leibson has this page called the EDA bloggers list on EDN from way back in 2008, but all links are broken. Sean Murphy on his blog in 2009 romanticizes what will happen to EDA blogging in 2011 when there are 500 EDA blogs, while going on to list an incredible 238 blogs, a valid concern at the time. Unfortunately, none of the independent blogs have survived, save his own blog.

There are still a few independent blogs that can be found, but you can count them on the fingers of your one hand, so I added a few FPGA and design blogs to the list as well.

First let me start with Dan Cooley's Deep Chip. From their about page: DeepChip.com is a 20 year old clearinghouse where chip designers provide the content.

FPGA Developer from Jeff Johson, who writes about his adventures in FPGA design on a regular basis.

Bert Verrycken, who is an ASIC and FPGA design expert and a freelancer runs this blog.

Sean Murphy's blog is one of the few ones that has not just survived but thrived.

Tudor Timi runs a blog called Verification Gentleman blog. He started the Verification Gentleman blog to store solutions to small (and big) problems he has faced in my day to day work.

Eli Billauer writes about a wide variety of topics across electrical engineering. The blog is always current, and has a systems flavor to it. Eli is a hard core engineer and works on a variety of freelance projects.

EDA Board is not technically a blog, but is an all encompassing site that covers multiple aspects of electronic design, science and mathematics. While this site is syndicated, I made an exception as it doesn't appear to be a marketing site.

Gary Smith EDA used to be a popular blog, and Gary was a very well respected EDA analyst, but he passed away in 2015, Blog archives are still available.

Please note I have not considered a blog if the number of posts are very low, say 10 over a 5 year period, or where no content has been updated since 2020, pre-pandemic. And, I am not associated with any of the bloggers.
